Overview
Rhythms of the World is a celebration of Edmonton’s multicultural heritage, with a focus on music and dance from each of the six ethnicities represented.
In the style of a museum/art gallery, we will be showcasing entertainers, artists, storyboards
and interactive activities from the First Nation, Metis, Ukrainian, Italian, Chinese and Indian
cultures.
The Galleria within Rhythms of the World will feature artworks from local artists that again
represent the styles and heritage of their individual cultures.
First Nations
Running Thunder Dancers
Experience the talent of the Running Thunder Dancers in Rhythms of the World at this year’s Capital EX! The mission of these exceptional dancers is to keep the honor and teachings of their ancestors alive. Do not miss the Running Thunder Dancers on the Rhythms of the World Stage!

Red Power Squad
Enjoy performances from the Red Power Squad, an aboriginal performing group hailing from Edmonton! Formed in 1998, the Red Power squad was designed to give inner city youth a way out of the negativity they faced on a daily basis. More than 10 years later, Red Power Group has exploded into a worldwide success. With top-notch traditional native dance combined with emcee and b-boy/b-girl skills, the Red Power Squad will leave you with a performance that is hard to forget! Experience the musical and dance styling of the Red Power Group in Rhythms of the World at this year’s Capital EX!

Reservation Soul
Powwow dancing provides a catalyst for self-expression and cultural identity. Dancing provides the ability to share a smile, a handshake or maybe just a story. Through re-enactments and modern version of Powwow style, Reservation Soul displays a colourful array of sights and sounds featuring the Plains Indian Culture. As a tribute to the past, Reservation Soul brings to mind the pride, strength and excitement of First Nations song and dance. Catch Reservation Soul in Rhythms of the World at this year’s Capital EX!

Yellow Ribbon Dance Troupe
Experience the high energy and skilled performance of the Yellow Ribbon Dance Troupe. Through traditional dance, the Yellow Ribbon Dancers aim to inspire, share lessons, create awareness and promote healthy lifestyles for all. These talented dancers and leaders aim to touch the hearts of many by entertaining and generating a connection with people. Enjoy a widespread cultural experience with the Yellow Ribbon Dance Troupe at Capital EX!

Metis
ASANI
ASANI is an Aboriginal women’s singing trio from Edmonton who use the inspiration of their cultural heritage to create music. Their debut CD, ‘Rattle and Drum’ was nominated for 11 music awards including a Juno and Canadian Aboriginal Music Award. Since the release of their new CD “Listen”, ASANI has received several nominations from the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and the Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Award! Enjoy the unique depth and impact of ASANI in Rhythms of the World at this year’s Capital EX!

Will Belcourt and the Hollywood Indians
Experience the music of Will Belcourt, an award winning singer, songwriter and musician from Alberta. Recently awarded Best Rock Album at the 2011 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, Will Belcourt brings his show-stopping performance to the Rhythms of the World Stage! Raking in various awards and nominations for his musical talent, Will has extensively toured across North America, sharing the stage with many great artists such as Dwight Yoakam, Big Sugar and Shane Yellowbird. It is a privilege to present Will Belcourt at Capital EX!

Jared Sowan
Join Jared Sowan, a multi-talented composer and performer, in Rhythms of the World at Capital EX 2012! Hailing from the Swan River First Nation, Jared has been signing Gospel, Country, Blues and Rock since the age of six. Jared can put an audience at ease with his songs of healing, respect for the earth and lyrical fun. Do not miss the voice that has been described as a soulful, creator given talent at this year’s Capital EX!

Prince Charles School Guitar and Fiddle Group
Come and enjoy the Prince Charles School Guitar and Fiddle group in Rhythms of the World. This group of students has amazing talent, commitment and a love of playing music together. They have recently had the honour of performing with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. They have also performed at schools, festivals and the Winspear Centre. The students at Prince Charles School are empowered by their experience of playing music and are looking to share their talent with you at Capital EX!

Ukraine
Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company
For more than 40 years, Cheremosh dancers have thrilled audiences around the world with their intricate footwork, acrobatic bravado and mesmerizing costumes. Canadian prime ministers, United States presidents and the British Royal Family have all applauded the unique art of Cheremosh. Capital EX is proud to bring Edmonton’s internationally acclaimed Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company to Rhythms of The World at this year’s fair!

Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn
Capital EX is pleased to present at Capital EX Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn, an accomplished artist who has had the opportunity to create projects around the world. She is well known for her watercolour paintings of flowers – poppies, sunflowers and endangered species are her specialty. Larisa enjoys painting images from her Ukrainian cultural heritage. Her unique depiction of Ukrainian dance, musical instruments and typical Ukrainian imagery recreates fond memories of rich cultural traditions. Capital EX is excited to host Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn at Rhythms of The World!

Luba Bilash
Enjoy the musical talent of Luba Bilash, a fifth generation Ukrainian Canadian singer/songwriter, on the Rhythms of the World stage at Capital EX! Her vast repertoire of musical abilities range from traditional folk ballads to contemporary pop tunes. Luba’s songs are a fresh contribution to the existing musical literature of the Ukraine and Canada. Do not miss Luba Bilash in Rhythms of the World!

Nikolai Shapka
At 15-years-old, Nicholai Shapka has been playing musical instruments in and around Edmonton and area events for more than eight years. A seasoned professional on the Ukrainian tsymbala, Nicholai will share his gift with Capital EX on the Rhythms of The World Stage!

Volya Dance School
Come to Rhythms of The World to experience to Volya Dance School, the hidden gem of Ukrainian Dance in Edmonton! Volya Ukrainian Dance Ensemble
Volya, meaning ‘freedom’, encompasses the unified spirit of the over 40 Ukrainian Dance ensemble members. Volya has entertained audiences in Germany, Holland, Brazil, Italy, California and Utah, Portugal, New York, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, and Turkey. Capital EX is proud to have the Volya Ukrainian Dance Ensemble share the rich Ukrainian dance tradition with Rhythms of The World!

China
Alberta Chinese Dance Association
Capital EX is pleased to host the Alberta Chinese Dance Association at this year’s fair. Founded in 2010 to promote Chinese art and culture through dance, The Alberta Chinese Dance Association will perform routines that range from the Oroqen Dance from Mongolia to the Drum Dance from the Shaanxi Province and the Tea Picking Dance from the Yunnan Province! Catch the Alberta Chinese Dance Association at Rhythms of The World Stage!
